USDA Announces $25M in Wildfire Risk Reduction - Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance Grants
Applications for this NOFO are due September 5, 2024
Announcement Type: Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)
Opportunity: Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance Grants
Overview and Eligible Uses:
This funding opportunity notice for the Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance Program is authorized and financed by the Inflation Reduction Act. Proposals and/or projects must clearly explain how and why they reduce hazardous fuels and why transportation to utilization locations is the limiting factor. These materials must be removed from National Forest System lands and/or demonstrate a benefit to these lands. Applications at the project level will only be accepted from existing projects, such as Forest Service Contracts and Agreements.
The funding opportunity for the Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance Program aims to enhance the removal of hazardous fuels from National Forest System lands and promote the utilization of these wood resources to benefit the economy. Applicants must demonstrate that transportation costs limit project viability. Each proposal will undergo a review by the Forest Service to assess eligibility.
The Forest Service seeks proposals from diverse applicants, including manufacturing facilities, wood energy companies, and logging contractors. Organizations supporting underserved communities and first-time federal fund applicants are encouraged to apply. Multiple projects from the same applicant are acceptable to promote broad participation and gather insights for future program development. Only transportation projects associated with existing awarded projects, such as timber sale contracts and stewardship agreements, or other projects that benefit national forests and grasslands through hazardous fuel removal, will be accepted. Projects not occurring on national forests and grasslands must demonstrate spatial and temporal relevance. If the applicant is not the Forest Service project holder, documentation indicating intent to procure hazardous fuels, such as a draft supply agreement showing material origin and quantity, is required.
