Interior Opens $135M Across Six States and Three Tribes for Abandoned Mine Land Grants

Opportunities: Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program for FY 2023
Overview and Eligible Uses: Eligible projects must demonstrate a nexus between abandoned mine land (AML) and water reclamation, and economic and community development, and return impacted areas to productive reuse. Impacted areas include AML and polluted waters, previously reclaimed AML or polluted water, and land adjacent to these areas, and can either include reclamation and development projects, or reclamation for the purpose of future development. The AMLER Program supports local investment opportunities that provide for sustainable long-term rehabilitation of coalfield economies.
The AMLER program received supplemental funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and is a Justice40 program.
Amount: Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are each allocated $29.35 million; Alabama, Ohio and Virginia are each allocated $11.74 million; and the Crow Tribe, the Hopi Tribe, and the Navajo Nation are each allocated $3.91 million.
