DOT Opens Applications for Intercity Passenger Rail Corridor ID and Development Program

Opportunity: Federal Railroad Administration Corridor Identification and Development Program
Overview and Eligible Uses: This program was created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is part of a package of USDOT programs intended to improve and expand the country’s intercity passenger rail system. The program supports planning efforts and implementation of new intercity passenger rail corridors under 750 miles, and improvements to existing routes. USDOT will use this program to guide long term planning for intercity rail, and identify a pipeline of capital projects to which to direct federal funding.
Corridor proposals can include:
Introducing new intercity passenger rail services (using existing or new rail lines)
Significantly improving existing services (geographic extensions, added frequencies, or reduced travel times)
Incremental improvements to existing services.
Projects will be subject to three different steps.
Step 1: Establishing a scope, schedule, and cost estimate for corridor
Step 2: Preparing a service development plan
Step 3: Project development
Amount: $500,000 is available to applicants to execute Step 1. Further funding will be contingent on project costs and available FRA funds, with no set limit.
Award Type: Competitive grant
Eligible Applicants: Amtrak, states, groups of states, entities implementing interstate compacts, regional passenger rail authorities, political subdivisions of a state, federally recognized Indian Tribes
