DOT Opens Applications for $4.5B to Expand Intercity Passenger Rail

Opportunity: Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program (U.S. DOT)
Overview and Eligible Uses: This program seeks to improve the quality and reach of the U.S. intercity passenger rail system. These funds are specifically for projects located outside of the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C. and Boston.
Funds may be used to bring existing intercity passenger or high-speed rail corridors (infrastructure, equipment, and facilities) into a state of good repair or create new ones. Improvement projects can seek to increase the safety, reliability, and general performance of rail lines, and can include project planning efforts such as environmental reviews or design. Capital Projects, may include the acquisition of real property interests.
These funds are part of $36B dedicated to improvements in U.S. passenger rail included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. A separate round of applications will open later this year for projects located on the Northeast Corridor. The Federal Railroad Administration is overseeing the grant program.
Amount: 50 awards together worth up to $4.56B

Eligible Applicants: County governments, city or township governments, state governments or a political subdivision of a state, Washington, D.C., Tribal governments, Amtrak, public agencies or authorities established by a state, or, a group of states, Interstate Compact, or any combination of entities listed.
