DOT opens $5M for Advanced Bridge Technology Clearinghouse Program

Overview and Eligible Uses: The program's objective is to establish an Accelerated Bridge Technologies Clearinghouse that will serve as a platform for advancing innovative transportation infrastructure techniques and materials within the realm of bridge technology.
The ABTC program aims to continuously identify, evaluate, prioritize, publish, and promote new and advanced bridge approaches, technologies, and materials for widespread adoption. Tasks include scanning for innovative approaches, evaluating their viability, making them accessible on a technologically advanced bridge clearinghouse platform, facilitating their adoption, and assessing the recipient's success in transitioning these advancements into practical applications.
Furthermore, the program aligns with U.S. DOT's strategic goals, particularly:
Safety: The Department aims to enhance safety for workers, passengers, and the public in transportation activities and infrastructure, including through the ABTC program's designs, inspections, and materials.
Climate Change and Sustainability: The Department seeks to fund projects in the ABTC program that reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, incorporate evidence-based climate resilience measures, and minimize environmental impacts, aligning with Executive Order 14008.
Amount:The program plans to provide a single award of $5,000,000 to an existing University Transportation Center (UTC) through a competitive process, with the stipulation of cost matching of at least 50% of the total cost for a total of $10M
Award Type: Cooperative Agreement
Eligible Applicants: Eligible applicant must be a University Transportation Center (UTC) with the following characteristics:
DOT-Funded UTC: Eligible applicants must be a current U.S. DOT-funded University Transportation Center (UTC) with expertise in bridge materials, approaches, technologies, and related sciences.
IIJA Funding: Only currently U.S. DOT-funded University Transportation Centers (UTCs) under the Infrastructure Improvements and Jobs Act (IIJA) are eligible to apply.
Demonstrable Experience: The UTC must demonstrate a track record in performing the following responsibilities:
Scanning for new and advanced bridge approaches and technologies.
Evaluating the viability and potential of these approaches and technologies.
Making these approaches, along with comprehensive evaluations, accessible to the public via the bridge clearinghouse platform.
Facilitating the adoption and implementation of these approaches and technologies within the industry.
Evaluating the ABTC program's success in transitioning advanced materials and bridge approaches to practical application.
