DOI Opens $400K for WaterSMART Applied Science Grant

Opportunity: WaterSMART – Applied Science Grants for Fiscal Year 2023
Overview and Eligible Uses: The DOI’s WaterSMART program aims to secure healthy water supplies for future generations. This grant is intended to support applied science projects that improve access to and use of hydrologic data, develop and improve water management tools, and improve modeling and forecasting capabilities in order to increase water supply reliability. Funded projects must be designed for use by water managers in AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, KS, MT, NE, NV, NM, ND, OK, OR, SD, TX, UT, WA, WY, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico.
Amount: DOI anticipates $4-5M in total program funding. Approximately 10-15 awards of up to $400K will be granted.
Award Type: Cooperative Agreement; Grant
Eligible Applicants: There are two categories of eligibility for this grant:
Category A:
States, Tribes, irrigation districts, and water districts
State, regional, or local authorities, which include one or more organization with water or power delivery authority
Other organizations with water or power delivery
Must be located in AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, KS, MT, NE, NV, NM, ND, OK, OR, SD, TX, UT, WA, WY, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico
Category B:
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, federally funded R&D centers, and non-profit entities that are partnered with a Category A entity
Must include a letter from the Category A partner in application that confirms partnership
