DOE Opens Applications for $349M Grant Program for Energy Storage Demonstrations

Opportunity: Long-Duration Energy Storage Demonstrations (DOE)
Overview and Eligible Uses: To solicit emerging Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) demonstration projects capable of delivering electricity for 10-24 hours or longer to support a low-cost, reliable, carbon-free electric grid. There are two topic areas funded under the program:
Topic Area 1: To enable lithium based LDES technologies for energy storage by mitigating technology risk to potential buyers, or offtakers.
Topic Area 2: to demonstrate operational viability for non-lithium-based energy storage technologies in LDES applications.
Amount: About 11 awards ranging between $9.5M and $70M, for a total of $349M in funding. A 50% cost-share is required
Award Type: Competitive grant / cooperative agreement
Eligible Applicants: Institutions of higher education, for-profit entities, non-profit entities, state and local governmental entities, and Tribal Nations.
Key Dates: Letters of Intent are due December 15, 2022. Full applications are due March 3, 2023.
