Announcement Type: Notice of Funding Opportunity (this program is currently accepting applications)
Opportunity: Enhanced Geothermal Systems Pilot Program
Overview and Eligible Uses: Projects selected under this program will build on the lessons of previous DOE Geothermal Technologies Office enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) demonstration initiatives, with new drilling and development in varied geological environments to accelerate EGS commercialization pathways throughout the U.S. Projects can be in the planning and development or implementation phases.
DOE estimates that with aggressive technology improvements, in areas relevant to EGS, geothermal power generation could provide 90 gigawatts-electric (GWe) firm, flexible power to the U.S. grid by 2050. This pilot program will help advance the development of new methods to realize this goal.
Amount: $84M in funding will be spread across four topic areas:
EGS Proximal Pilot Demonstrations: 1-4 awards between $5M and $15M, for a total of $24M.
ESG Green Field Pilot Demonstrations: 1-3 awards between $5M and $25M for a total of $25M.
Super-hot/supercritical Pilot Demonstrations: 1 award for up to $20M
Eastern U.S. ESG Pilot Demonstrations: 1 award for up to $14M
