Announcement Type: Request for Proposals (RFP)
Opportunity: HALEU Enrichment Acquisition RFP
Overview and Eligible: DOE has issued a RFP to secure uranium enrichment services, aiming to establish a dependable domestic supply of fuels using high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Currently unavailable commercially from U.S.-based suppliers, the boost in domestic supply is expected to drive the development and deployment of advanced reactors in the United States.
The HALEU Availability Program will acquire HALEU through purchase agreements with domestic industry partners and produce limited initial amounts of material from DOE-owned assets. The HALEU Availability Program is intended to spur demand for additional HALEU production and private investment in the nation’s nuclear fuel supply infrastructure—ultimately removing the federal government’s initial role as a supplier.
Amount: The IRA allocated $500 million for HALEU enrichment contracts from this RFP and a separate one in November. The DOE plans to award contracts for up to 10 years, ensuring contractors a minimum order value of $2 million.
