Eligible applicants: individuals, states, local government, tribal entities, forprofits, nonprofits, higher education institutions. Applications are due April 28, 2023
Announcement Type: Notice of Funding Opportunity (this program is currently accepting applications)
Opportunity: Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office FOA in Support of Hydrogen Shot
Overview and Eligible Uses: Grants awarded under this program will focus on research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of key hydrogen delivery and storage technologies as well as affordable and durable fuel cell technologies. Fuel cell RD&D projects will focus on four topic areas, primarily focused on applications for heavy-duty trucks, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and eliminate tailpipe emissions that are harmful to local air quality.
These efforts will work in concert with hydrogen-related activities funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs and an upcoming funding opportunity for RD&D to advance electrolysis technologies and improve the manufacturing and recycling of critical components and materials. This program supports the Department’s Hydrogen Shot goal of reducing the cost of clean hydrogen to $1 per kilogram within a decade.
Amount: $47M total, spanning four project areas:
$7M is available for Hydrogen Carrier Development, with 7 to 10 awards anticipated, for up to $1M each.
$10M is available for Onboard Storage Systems for Liquid Hydrogen, with 2 or 3 awards anticipated, for up to $5M each.
$12M is available for Liquid Hydrogen Fueling/Transfer Components and Systems, with 2 to 4 awards anticipated, for up to $6M each.
$15M is available for High Performing and Durable Membrane Electrode Assemblies for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Applications, with 3 to 5 awards anticipated, for up to $5M each.
Projects will require a 20% cost share, unless awarded to an institution of higher education or a non-profit organization.
