DOE Opens $38M to National Labs for Grid Modernization Initiative

Opportunity: Grid Modernization Initiative (GMI)
Overview and Eligible Uses: The Department of Energy’s Grid Modernization Initiative National Lab call will “advance key research and development priorities needed to build a grid that can deliver resilient, reliable, flexible, secure, sustainable, affordable, and equitable electricity. Funded projects must “develop and support the deployment of concepts, tools, and technologies to better integrate all sources of electricity and energy storage, improve the nation's cybersecurity, and incorporate energy justice and climate data in grid planning and operation.”
DOE will make awards across five topic areas, including:
Power and Controls Electronics
Cybersecurity for Architectures, Standards, and Practices
Quantum Facilities for Computing, Sensing, and Security
Equitable System Operation and Planning
Climate Impact on Energy Resources
The goals of this Lab Call will support the electrification ambitions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act.
Amount: The program will distribute $13.75M for topic area 1, $7.31M for topic area 2, $3.7M for topic area 3, $4M for topic area 4, and $9.9M for topic area 5, all of which will be awarded in three tranches across the three years, and across various sub-categories of projects within each year, for each topic.
Award Type: Competitive grant
Eligible Applicants: At least two National Laboratories must team up as lead applicants. Submissions are encouraged to include substantive participation from external stakeholders such as industry, academia, and non-governmental organizations.
Key Dates: Concept submissions are due June 5, 2023 and full proposals will be due July 24, 2023, by invitation only.
