DOE Opens $32M for Studies on Critical Minerals and Materials Production from Coal-Based Resources

Opportunity: Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) – Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) Studies for Production of Critical Minerals and Materials (CMM) from Coal-Based Resources
Overview and Eligible Uses: This program aims to fund FEED studies for intermediate- or demonstration-scale Rare Earth Element (REE) Facilities that demonstrate the extraction, separation, and refining from coal and coal by-products to high purity individual or binary rare earth metals (REM) and/or critical minerals and materials (CMM). Projects will work to bolster domestic supply chains for REE from a diversity of sources and should determine if there are, and mitigate, any potential environment or public health impacts of REE recovery from coal-based resources.
Amount: DOE anticipates $32M in total program funding. Approximately 6 awards will be made, ranging from $4M to $15M, depending on topic area.
Award Type: Cooperative Agreement
Eligible Applicants: Individuals, institutions of higher education, non-profit and for-profit entities, state and local government entities, and Tribal nations are eligible to apply.
