DOE releases initial information on Carbon Capture grant programs
Eligible applicants: NA. Applications are due: NA
The two opportunities are listed below. This tracker will send another update when the funding opportunities are open. For a list of currently open funding opportunities, see the resources at the bottom of this page.
Opportunity: Carbon Capture Technology Program, Front-End Engineering Design for Carbon Dioxide Transport (Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory and Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management)
Overview and Eligible Uses: The Front-End Engineering Design for Carbon Dioxide Transport studies will support and accelerate the planning for CO2 transport by a variety of modes, such as through rail, trucks, ships, and pipelines. Te first solicitation will prioritize CO2 pipeline projects with two or more carbon capture sources connected to one or more secure geologic storage locations and/or to one or more CO2 conversion locations (e.g., a location that converts CO2 into carbon-based chemicals and/or materials)
Amount: Individual award amount TBD, up to a total of $100M
Type: Competitive grant
Eligible Applicants: TBD
Key Dates: Funding opportunity to open in the coming months

Opportunity: Carbon Capture Demonstration Projects Program (joint program of the Department of Clean Energy Demonstrations, Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, National Energy Technology Laboratory)
Overview and Eligible Uses: The program will focus on integrated carbon capture, transport, and storage technologies and infrastructure that can be readily replicated and deployed at fossil energy power plants and major industrial sources of CO2, such as cement, pulp and paper, iron and steel, and certain types of chemical production facilities. Projects will address technical, environmental, permitting, and financing challenges for commercial deployment.
Amount: About $160M for 12 projects in Phase 1 and $2.1B for 6 projects in Phases 2-4 for a total of up to $2.54 billion.
Type: Competitive grant
Eligible Applicants: TBA with full notice of funding opportunity
