DOE Announces Two Forthcoming Grant Opportunities
These opportunities, focused on wind and tidal energy, are likely to open for applications in the coming months.
In the last two days, the Department of Energy announced Notice of Intents for 3 different funding opportunities:
Address Key Deployment Challenges for Offshore, Land-Based, and Distributed Wind
U.S. Tidal Energy Advancement
These Notice of Intents are preliminary notices that announce DOE’s intention of opening applications in the coming months. Applications for these programs are not yet open. A brief summary of each of the programs is below:
Address Key Deployment Challenges for Offshore, Land-Based, and Distributed Wind
Overview and Eligible Uses: The program will fund four main activities:
Advancing technologies needed to transmit large amounts of electricity from offshore wind over long distances
Helping coastal communities benefit from offshore wind development through social science research and community engagement,
Improving permitting processes to make distributed wind more accessible to communities where distributed wind can be cost-effectively and equitably deployed, and
Improving technologies that help bats avoid wind turbines as the industry works to minimize impacts to local wildlife and ecosystems.
Amount: Up to $30M in total funding
Anticipated Application Launch Date: November 2022

Build upon state clean energy strategies with local partners;
Attract competitive tidal/current developers for technology site integration;
Improve tidal/current Research and Development (R&D);
Build site infrastructure and supply chains, with increased participation at the state level, including local agency, Tribal and university research participation; and
Establish a working business model covering site development to commercial scale.
Amont: $35M
Anticipated Application Launch Date: March 2023
