DOE Announces NOI for BIL Funding to Advance EV Battery Recycling and Second-Life Applications
Announcement Type: Notice of Intent
Opportunity: Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Electric Drive Vehicle Battery Recycling, Transport, and Design
Overview and Eligible Uses: The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) plans to release a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) named "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Electric Drive Vehicle Battery Recycling, Transport, and Design" on behalf of the Vehicle Technologies Office. The FOA will support BIL section 40208, which focuses on research, development, and demonstration of second-life applications for used electric drive vehicle batteries and technologies for the final recycling and disposal of these batteries.
The FOA intends to address key challenges in battery recycling, encouraging innovative solutions that reduce costs through improved transport, disassembly, and preprocessing techniques. This includes enhancing the safety of battery transportation, designing more cost-effective packaging, and facilitating efficient dismantling and separation of battery components. Additionally, the FOA will support the recycling of electric drive vehicle battery accessory components like plastics and polymer enclosures. The overall objective is to promote scalable and profitable battery recycling practices that align with the goals of economic revitalization and sustainable resource management.
Amount: he FOA is expected to allocate around $35 million for battery recycling and $2 million for recycling electric drive vehicle battery accessory components.
Award Type: Discretionary grant
Eligible Applicants: The FOA aims to encourage engagement from a wide range of stakeholders, including labor unions, underserved communities, and underrepresented groups.
Key Dates: EERE plans to issue the FOA on or about November 2023
