DOE Announces $27M for Carbon Capture Technology Program
Eligible Applicants: individuals, higher education institutions, forprofits, nonprofits, states, local governments and tribal entities. Applications are due November 16, 2023.
Announcement Type: Notice of Funding Opportunity (this program is currently accepting applications)
Opportunity: BIL: Carbon Capture Technology Program, Front-End Engineering and Design for Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Trans.
Overview and Eligible Uses: The BIL allocated a total of $100 million for the five-year period spanning fiscal years (FYs) 2022 through 2026 to support the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) Program for CO2 infrastructure projects under the Carbon Capture Technology Program (Section 962 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, as amended by Section 40303 of the BIL). This FOA is the second release following the one on September 22, 2022.
This funding aims to facilitate the transportation of carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from industrial and power generation facilities, as well as legacy carbon dioxide emissions directly captured from the atmosphere. The purpose is to transport CO2 to locations for permanent geologic storage or conversion into useful products. Various modes of transport, including pipelines, rail, trucks, barges, or ships, can be used for this purpose.
The funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will specifically support front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies for regional CO2 transport networks. These studies will focus on assessing carbon transport costs, optimizing transport network configurations, and addressing technical and commercial considerations to enable the broader deployment of carbon capture, conversion, and storage at a commercial scale.
Amount: DOE expects to make up to nine awards for up to $3 million each with a minimum of a 20% cost-sharing from the awardees.
Award Type: Cooperative Agreement
Eligible Applicants: individuals, institutions of higher education, for- and non-profit organizations, state and local governments, and Indian tribes.
Key Dates: Applications are due November 16, 2023.
