Announcement Type: Notice of Funding Opportunity (this program is accepting applications)
Opportunity: CHIPS AI/AE for Rapid, Industry-informed Sustainable Semiconductor Materials and Processes (CARISSMA) Competition
Overview and Eligible Uses: This program aims to accelerate the discovery and validation of sustainable materials critical for the future of semiconductors, addressing environmental challenges like toxic chemical use, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource efficiency. By applying AI and artificial experimentation (AI/AE), the program seeks to fast-track materials research, forming university-led, industry-informed collaborations to support sustainable semiconductor manufacturing and develop a new generation of researchers skilled in AI/AE.
The program’s objectives include expediting the research and production of sustainable, high-performance semiconductor materials through AI/AE; integrating sustainability metrics alongside traditional design factors; empowering emerging research institutions through industry and academic partnerships; and expanding the talent pool in semiconductor R&D by training graduates and faculty in AI/AE research.
This program focuses on the following operational areas:
OA1: Develop enduring partnerships, establish co-optimization goals, and facilitate research transfer for continued application.
OA2: Build and support AI/AE infrastructure, particularly at emerging research institutions, to conduct foundational research on materials for semiconductor needs.
OA3: Increase the pool of skilled domestic researchers by training experts in AI/AE methods pertinent to semiconductor materials and processes.
Amount: DOC National Institute of Standards and Technology provides a total amount of $100,000,000 for up to 3 projects, ranging between $20,000,000 and $40,000,000 each, for projects lasting up to five years.
Award Type: Discretionary
