DOC and NOAA announce $200K Prize for Extreme Heat Preparedness Challenge
Application window is open now and runs through November 15, 2024.
Announcement Type: Prize competition
Opportunity: DOC and NOAA Heat Tabletop Exercise Design Challenge
Overview and Eligible Uses: Extreme heat is a leading cause of weather-related illness and death in the United States, resulting in more fatalities annually than hurricanes, tornadoes, severe storms, and floods. In recent decades, rising temperatures have intensified heat-related health impacts, affecting livelihoods and infrastructure. These impacts are likely to increase without proactive measures to understand heat exposure, identify those most at risk, and implement short- and long-term risk reduction strategies.
To enhance resilience, communities across the U.S. are developing heat action plans and updating all-hazard plans to address extreme heat’s effects on people, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Many of these new heat plans remain untested. The National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) and NOAA’s Regional Collaboration Network are hosting this challenge to invite local governments, in partnership with community members and leaders, to create Heat Tabletop Exercise Situation Manuals featuring realistic extreme heat scenarios. These manuals should support tabletop exercises that foster equitable resilience to extreme heat, connecting short-term preparedness and response with long-term planning and risk mitigation.
The funding for this competition will be provided by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
Amount: Up to 10 winners will be selected and the overall number of winners will evenly divide a total cash prize pool of $200,000.
