DOE Opens Applications for $26M Solar and Wind Grid Grant Opportunity
Deadlines for the new opportunity are already approaching less than a month away.
Announcement Type: Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA): The funding opportunity, authorized under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is now open for applications.
Opportunity: Solar and Wind Grid Services and Reliability Demonstration (DOE)
Overview and Eligible Uses: To invest in innovative research and development that accelerates the large-scale development and deployment of solar and wind technologies. The program funds two types of projects:
Wind and Solar Grid Services Design, Implementation, and Demonstration: Projects support full-scale demonstration projects that seamlessly integrate renewable generation with other large-scale or aggregated distributed energy resource (DER) technologies to provide ancillary
(grid) services and improve reliability.
Protection of Bulk Power Systems with High Contribution from Inverter-Based Resources: Projects develop a better understanding of how protection systems will operate under very-high inverter-based resources (IBR) scenarios through advancements in modeling and simulation capabilities and to develop and validate strategies and new technologies that can maintain system protection at any level of IBR penetration and improve reliability.
Amount: Approximately 3-5 awards of $3-$6M (Wind and Solar Grid Services Design projects), and approximately 3-4 awards of $2-$3M (protection of bulk power systems projects). The total amount of all awards is estimated to be $26M. Cost-sharing / local match is required at 20-50% depending on the project.
Award Type: Competitive grant
Eligible Applicants: Institutions of higher education, for-profit and non-profit entities, state and local governments, and Tribal Nations. Only domestic entities may apply.
